January 2025 Astrology Highlights
Welcome to January. It’s cold, the festive season is over, and we either feel a little miffed about that or have a strong desire to make a change. Many of us feel ready to start fresh, and the simmering of new beginnings and spark of excitement can be felt.
If you’re feeling ready to race ahead - go for it and follow your intuition! But for those of us still feeling the chill, I invite you to slow down, enjoy the cosy moments and remember we are still in winter. The time for new growth peaks in the spring, during Aries season.
For now, we are still wintering. Like the big brown bear who hunkers down in her nest, full of food (in our case, probably cheese and chocolate) ready to emerge at the return of the warmer days.
What to expect this month
The following is a summary of the Astrology of the month. I’ll go over which planets are making moves and how it will affect us little guys down here.
Most significantly, The Lunar Nodes are changing signs. This transit will affect us for a while. We also have Venus moving into Pisces - bringing compassionate and loving energy along with it, Mars retrograde in Cancer, and Mercury moving into Capricorn.
Mercury is small and fast. This means it changes zodiac signs fairly regularly. So though this isn’t front-page news, Capricorn and Mercury are a friendly pairing and so this could prove useful!
This may help to mitigate the more challenging Cancer/Mars pairing, who feel a bit like two colleagues forced to collaborate on a work project. They bring very different ideas on how to get things done. One keeps getting upset, the other frustrated. It’s not the best, but it’s doable if everyone keeps it respectful! Astrology is vast, and this is just a snapshot so take what resonates, leave the rest!
Key Astrological Dates and Themes for January 2025
January 3rd - Venus in Pisces
Make art, listen more than you speak and enjoy the soft energy.
Early on this month, Venus, the planet of love, pleasure and our values move into the sign of Pisces Pisces energy is known for being dreamy and artistic. Venus and Pisces work well together, since they are both sensory energies, and Venus loves the mystical waters of Pisces. You may be feeling extra creative, especially if you have significant Pisces, Libra or Taurus placements. Trying to carve out time to make art, listen to music or visit an art gallery would be time well spent right now, and get you inspired. As always, it’s good to be mindful of the potential pitfalls of this energy which could be feeling ungrounded or navigating a bit of brain fog! Nature-based visualisations or meditations can help.
January 6th -Mars Retrograde in Cancer
Mindfully assert your needs and try to regulate your emotions.
Mars has been pinging back and forth between Leo and Cancer since early December and will continue until February 23rd. I feel like many of us are learning to be more confident and assertive (Leo/Mars) when it comes to speaking up for our needs and developing healthier self-esteem (Cancer). Retrogrades - when a planet appears to move backwards, offer us a chance to revisit or review a situation. Mars speaks to our energy levels, drive, passion and frustrations. Cancer can talk about our home environment, emotional security and the way we are nurtured or care for others. We may feel more pulled to pour ourselves into our relationships, with the retrograde aspect asking us to be mindful of over-giving. If you have significant Leo or Cancer placements, you may have felt this as a big shift in the way you assert yourself in general. It is okay to say no and advocate for yourself. You are still a good person even if you have to put yourself first sometimes.
January 8th - Mercury in Capricorn
A little bit of luck this month, helping us get clear on our vision and next steps.
Mercury is the planet associated with communication, and how we think. In Capricorn, Mercury will take on the straight-talking and down-to-earth energies of our lovely sea-goats , giving us a boost in our ability to think clearly, while trusting our intuition. Real-life mountain goats may look adorable, but you can see from a mile off how sturdy and strong they are. They scale seemingly impossible landscapes and seem to completely defy the laws of physics. It’s just who and what they are, they just keep climbing that mountain until they reach their destination. We might develop a strong desire to follow through on our ideas right now, particularly if they relate to our goals or vision for the future. Capricorn gives us the determination, and Mercury gets our minds buzzing with ideas and inspiration. Sharing ideas and gathering with trusted friends could be beneficial right now to breathe new life and fresh perspectives into a situation.
January 11th - Lunar Nodes into Pisces & Virgo
Stepping more into our spiritual nature and releasing perfectionism.
As the Sun and Moon dance through the Zodiac, occasionally their orbits cross paths, and we get what’s called a Lunar Node. One point is in the Northern Hemisphere and the other is in the South. They are always opposite energies. Since July, the north node has been in Aries and the south node has been in Libra. It lands in different ways for us individually, but overall many of us may have been developing a stronger sense of self (Aries) whilst being selective about our relationships and developing healthier boundaries (Libra). People-pleasing behaviours are being made conscious for self-development and growth. The nodes will change signs this month. Pisces will be in the north node, which will shift our focus to our spiritual nature, dreams and imagination. We might feel like we want to colour outside the lines or be among the stars. Virgo will be in the south and is the opposite energy. It likes to be organised, for everything to have its place and be in order. We may be asked to become aware of any perfectionist tendencies and learn to allow ourselves to flow more freely.
The Astrology of the Sun & Moon in January 2025
Sun in Capricorn: December 22nd - January 19th
Dependable, loyal and strong. The Sun has been in Capricorn since the 22nd of December and will stay there until the 19th of January. We may have felt a focus on practical matters such as finances, work and personal goals.
All zodiac signs have strengths and challenges. Capricorn needs to balance work with play. Occasionally we need to switch off from obligations and be present in the moment. A perfect message from this past holiday season.
Full Moon in Cancer: January 14th
Full Moons can illuminate situations or feelings. Cancer is a water sign so you may experience heightened emotions during this time, depending on your birth chart.
The sign of Cancer is associated with the home and being comfortable. Cancer energy generally likes its comfort zone (as a Cancer rising, I can confirm this!) but with Mars, the fiery warrior planet of action, drive and assertion retrograde in Cancer this month, our little crabs may be feeling extra crabby.
Cancer energy reminds us to nurture ourselves and be mindful of our emotions. With Mars here it may be especially important to lean on self-soothing practices such as deep breathing, baths and meditation to cool Mars down.
Sun in Aquarius: January 20th - February 18th
The Sun changes signs monthly, so on the 19th of January, it will move into the sign of Aquarius.
This is a fresh energy of seeking mental stimulation, good conversation and a warm fuzzy feeling towards our communities and close-knit units.
The Sun illuminates and brings heat, so we may feel passionate about humanitarian pursuits and collective progression. This is part of a wider picture and overarching theme for us right now since Pluto the planet of transformation moved into Aquarius last year, which is kind of a big deal since Pluto moves very slowly (every 250 years!)
Expect change for the greater good, and personal and collective growth.
New Moon in Aquarius: January 29th
As the Sun steps into the realm of Aquarius on the 20th, so too does the Moon later on in the month when we get a New Moon in this sign.
This brings us fresh, lively energy perfect for setting intentions for the new cycle ahead.
Anything around learning, self-development or friendship would be great to bring forth at this time if that’s something that appeals to you moving forward into the year.
I hope you have had a great January so far, but if you have had a wobbly start just remember it’s okay. It happens and we are not built to be ultra-productive during this season. Fluffy socks, books and candles are where it’s at right now.
